OIT Labs License Server

As an alternative to activating multiple copies of software individually or running your own licensing server, you may connect to the OIT Labs license server. Using a license server is a very time-effective solution to managing multiple instances of software. This server is primarily used for OIT labs, and is not an officially supported service. This means that

  • While our goal is high availability, it is not guaranteed to be available 100% of the time
  • Updates will be installed when software is updated in OIT labs
  • No notifications will be sent when the server or licensing service is restarted
  • No support is provided beyond the instructions on this page

License files and server names are protected by netID and are available to Duke faculty staff only.

Mathematica – Activating when launching for the first time.

Mathematica 8 and newer:

When you launch mathematica for the first time, you have the option to activate Mathematica online by entering an Activation Key.  Instead, click the Other ways to activate button.  Select the third option to Connect to a network license server.  For server name, enter the license server name and click Activate.

Mathematica 7 and older:

When you launch Mathematica for the first time, you will have the option to activate your product (Personalize your product).  Select the second option, Network license, and enter the license server name and press OK.

Mathematica – Saving a mathpass file

An alternate method is to save a password file on your computer for Mathematica to access.

Log into NetID services if you aren’t already.  (This can be accomplished by clicking here and logging in), and then Save this file [mathpass (no file extension – delete the .txt if it is added automatically)]  to your computer by right-clicking the link and selecting save target as or save link as or copying the text into a text editor and saving it as mathpass (no file extension).

Place the file into the proper folder.  Below are the default folders:

Windows

  •  C:\ProgramData\Mathematica\Licensing

Mac

  • /Library/Mathematica/Licensing

Linux

  • /usr/share/Mathematica/Licensing

To run Mathematica or MathLM, you must have the appropriate password. Passwords are stored within a file called mathpass. The location of the mathpass file for Mathematica varies by operating system. See “Configuration Files for the Wolfram System” for mathpass file locations. The mathpass file for MathLM is located in the top-level MathLM installation directory. The mathpass file is created automatically by the installer, but you may find it necessary to edit the file by hand at times.

  10. Enter the path or browse to the license file you just saved to your computer during the previous step.
  11. Review the list of products to be installed and confirm your installation settings by clicking Install.
  12. Complete any further configuration steps (depending on your products). When installation is complete, click Finish to launch MATLAB.
