Research Toolkits: Overview of process to create VMs or other services

Research Toolkits (https://rtoolkits.web.duke.edu) is a source for virtual machines, data storage space, and other research-related computational resources for Duke researchers. By default, regular rank faculty have access to the website and have an allocation of CPU-core, RAM, and storage resources to use at their discretion.

Current allocations of CPU, RAM, and storage are available here [https://oit.duke.edu/help/articles].

The process to use Research Toolkits, in general, is as follows:

For regular-rank faculty.

  • Direct your web browser to https://rtoolkits.web.duke.edu/
  • Click on “Login with your NetID” that is located in the upper right-hand corner of your browser window.
  • Log in using your Duke NetID and password.
  • You will see a list of current projects, or if you have no projects, none will be listed. If others have included you as a member of their projects, you will see those projects listed.
  • To create a project, click on the “Create New Project” button in the upper right of your browser window.
  • To change or create resources for an existing project or to add, change, or remove members of a project, click on the name of the project in the list of projects.

For people who are given admin privileges on a project. These privileges can be assigned by a regular rank faculty member to anyone with a Duke NetID. Admins in a project can create VMs or carve out storage using the regular rank faculty member’s individual allocation. Individuals granted admin privileges can do this within specific projects.

  • Direct your web browser to https://rtoolkits.web.duke.edu/
  • Click on “Login with your NetID” that is located in the upper right-hand corner of your browser window.
  • Log in using your Duke NetID and password.
  • You will see a list of current projects in which you have been granted admin privileges.
  • To change or create resources for an existing project or to add, change, or remove members of a project, click on the name of the project in the list of projects.
